From the tourist train in Montpellier, that is.
Like many cities we’ve visited, Montpellier has a little motorized tourist train that takes you around the (mostly) pedestrian-only old city center. With temperatures super hot that first day in Montpellier, I decided it was worth taking the 40 minute ride around to see what there was to see.
Below I’ve included photos that I took from the train. It wasn’t a “hop on, hop off” kind of thing – you got on, and rode it around until the end. I made a note of some places to go back to, like that trompe l’oeil building I talked more about the other day.
Also, I thought the Place Royal du Peyrou looked worthy of a second visit. I did eventually make back there to take some more photos, but the story of that adventure will have to wait for another day.
In the meantime, hop on the train and see a representative sample of what I saw from the train in Montpellier.
- Place de le Comédie
- Esplanade Charles de Gaulle
- Starting off
- Courthouse, Montpellier
- Statuary outside some gardens
- Place Royal du Peyrou
- Statue of Louis XIV in the Place Royal du Peyrou
- Looking toward the Porte du Peyrou, a triumphal arch
- Train headed toward the Porte du Peyrou
- Outdoor cafes seen from the train
- Sample small street in Montpellier
- That trompe l’oeil building again
Linda, about that place you think is the courthouse. Does it look familiar to you, give or take a few columns? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:US_Supreme_Court_Building.jpg
@Will – indeed. I do believe the same inspiration was behind them both, eh? 😉
This set of pictures makes me want to go to Montpelier–it seemed pretty high-class. The Plaza Comedia was so clean cut and smoothe. The esplanade de Gaulle had a very attractive arrangement of flowers. The statuary was nice and the small streets looked clean and neat. But I was really impressed with the illusions at the Trompe ‘oille. I would swear that those kids were real. Amazing!
First just was our Supreme Court building. Romanesque both. I agree with Stan. The place looks so clean and large and filled with so many interesting things. It is amazing. Excellent photography last one too.
