Another beautifully clear weekend, led to a few more nice photos of a punting boat on the Neckar. When the sky is clear, the reflections in the skill Neckar River are really something.

Septemberfest in Germany
So it’s October now, and more than one person in North America has asked me if I know anything about Oktoberfest, since we’re living in Germany now.
As it happens, I do have some somewhat surprising information to pass along. Continue reading
Punting on the Neckar
Punting on the Neckar is a popular pastime here in Tübingen, both with locals and with tourists. You rent a boat that seats at least 10 and hire a professional “punter” to propel the boat, or maybe try your hand at driving it yourself if you’re so inclined. The idea is to glide down the Neckar, sailing around the island that sits in the middle of the Neckar river across from the old city center. That island is usually always just on the left edge of those standard postcard photos of Tübingen, including the one yesterday.
Postcard Shot Take 3: Nearly Perfect
Since moving to our new apartment in the Altstadt (old city) part of Tübingen, I walk to my German class instead of taking the bus every day. My walking route takes me over the bridge from which you get that standard “postcard view” of the old part of Tübingen.
Local foods: Champagne and Caviar
Tübingen is located in the province of Baden-Württemberg, which is in the Schwabian part of Germany. One of the local specialities is champagne and caviar, which we’ve sampled more than once. The most common way to eat those things is to cook them with little pieces of hot dogs. Continue reading
The Bare Necessities in Life
For 3 years in Bolzano, we lived without many modern-day appliances/conveniences that we had in North America. In Bolzano we had, in no particular order: Continue reading
According to Goethe
CC ran across this fun quote from Goethe:
Die beste Bildung findet ein gescheiter Mensch auf Reisen.
The best education for a clever person is found in travel.
– J.W. von Goethe, Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre
I like it.
A little while longer
Well, I’m still in the midst of errands every day, and the only Internet cafe that seems to be near us doesn’t have hours that fit well into my schedule at the moment. So, while I’ll try to get back over to the Internet Cafe before the end of the week, I won’t promise. Continue reading
Updates
We’re now officially moved into the apartment. That’s the good news. The bad news for the blog is that for the next few days I won’t have a good way to post anything. We still have a bunch of running around to do with errands, and I’ll need to locate the nearest Internet cafe — our apartment won’t have Internet access until October 11th, if we’re lucky. However, I’ll plan to be back (if I can) on Tuesday, October 4th. Monday is a holiday here (unification day, I believe), and so everything is closed. Anyway, have a good weekend – see you back here next week!
Quick Postcard from Tübingen
Our Internet connection at the vacation apartment has been sporadic at the best of times all month. Today, it apparently decided it needed a periodic vacation, as it went in and out every time I tried to access the web, which made it a bit difficult to do anything on the blog. Continue reading
