Chris and I made a short day-trip to the Black Forest area of Germany on Saturday. It’s less than 2 hours by train from Tübingen, but there are no direct trains that go from here to there – we wound up taking 4 different trains (well, two trains and two trams going there, and 2 trains and 1 tram coming back. Coffee and cream
When I was a kid, my uncle Bob always drank cold coffee. I recall at family gatherings that there would always be a cup of coffee set aside and put into the refrigerator for him. As a kid, this was unusual to see – everyone else I knew at the time preferred a piping hot cup of java. Continue reading
Trick of the light
As I was walking through the park here this morning, my eyes fell on a plant bathed in sun and shadow and I had to stop and pull out my pocket camera. Continue reading
Friends and Faces
Two weeks ago we went to Heidelberg to meet up with BDG, a long-time friend of the Culy family. She and her husband, MG, were on a summer trip to Germany. The Culys have been friends with BDG’s family for more than Continue reading
Lock out
You might remember that I talked about the “locks of love” back in February. Continue reading
Blame it on the Bossa Nova
A while back Chris ran across a list of the songs that have been at the top of the pop charts in Germany over the years. Just for fun, I had looked to see what was the #1 song in Germany on the day I was born, May 28, 1963. I’d intended to work it into a post on my birthday this year. But as it turned out, the song that was #1 on my birthday didn’t seem that exciting. More interesting was the song that was #1 the week after my birthday, called Schuld war nur der Bossa Nova. Trying to figure out Coventry
Coventry was an interesting smallish-sized town, but it’s a town that seems like it’s still in search of an identity. I can imagine that back when it was a town full of medieval-style buildings, when the towering Gothic cathedral dominated the surroundings and when the central market plaza was a vibrant meeting place for the towns people, Continue reading
Encounter in Coventry
So there I was that Friday in July, wandering around Coventry’s indoor-outdoor downtown shopping center/shopping mall after taking those fountain photos by the cathedral. A woman walked toward me. As she approached, she said she would sell me a lucky charm for a mere 10 pounds (~$15) that would make me lucky in love. I smiled at her novel approach for asking for money, but turned her down nonetheless. Continue reading
The Emerald Tree
While walking down the street the other day, I spotted another interesting puddle reflection.
Portrait of Water
A friend of mine got married on a bright and sunny day here in Tübingen. In processing the photos I took at the wedding, I saw that the bright sunshine predictably left some things washed out, and overall the light was kind of flat in many of the photos. Although I already knew a few possible fixes, I was experimenting this morning Continue reading
