As you may recall, quarkteig desserts are one of our favorite pastry types here in Tübingen, but they only make them at a few bakeries, and only for different seasonal celebrations. We missed the “St. Nicholas” day variation this year, as we weren’t in Tübingen on St. Nicholas day. However, on Christmas Eve they had these little elf heads made of quarkteig. Which was puzzling, since there is typically no representation in Germany of the Weinachtsmann (Santa Claus) having any elves. But I can’t figure out what else this is supposed to be. After all, it can’t be the Weinachtsmann himself, because there’s no beard, but it does have the little elf hat.
