Monday Mysteries: The Chocolate Pot that wasn’t

Today on Monday Mysteries we take a quick look at something that we encountered last week: a Chocolate Pot that wasn’t either chocolate or a “pot”.

We were eating at the British Museum’s fancy restaurant, where we’d had that delicious meal back in September.  Their special “themed” menu on offer in December was, of course, based on the season, and so they offered a British Christmas themed selected of items. You can see the whole menu here in a pdf on the British Museum’s website. There are 3 choices per courses, and we tried 2 out of the 3 for each course.  We did NOT have the pumpkin soup, the farrow seed, nor the poached pear, but had the other items you’ll see listed.

Anyway, what was puzzling was the dessert. One was an English Trifle, and that came and was easily identifiable as such:

Now, the second one we ordered was listed as a “Chocolate Pot”. Neither Chris nor I had ever before encountered a “Chocolate Pot” on a menu, so we weren’t sure what to expect. We vaguely supposed that it would be served is a little pot-like dish — and also crucially involve something that looked like chocolate.

However, this is what they served:

"Chocolate Pot" or so they said, British Museum Restaurant

“Chocolate Pot” or so they said, British Museum Restaurant

Not what we expected at all, as it turned out.

Granted, it was topped with white chocolate, but it looked and tasted just like a creme caramel.  It was not at all chocolaty.

So here’s my question to all you foodies out there – what do you think?  In reading about Chocolate Pots today on the web, specifically about the “Chocolate and Pedro Ximinez Pot” item as listed on the menu, I think we probably should have asked if they hadn’t made a mistake (and/or substituted the creme caramel for the intended Pot dessert.)  Maybe it was supposed to be a chocolate version of the French Pot du Crème? Or perhaps it really was some British version of Chocolate and Pedro Ximinez Pot as listed on the menu? I’m not sure.

But at least I’m sure that it’s definitely today’s Monday mystery.
