Once the strings stopped coming down

Our weather recently here in Tübingen has been really bizarre. Last night we had a storm that lasted for hours, starting around 10pm.  The thunder wasn’t really thunder – it was more like a plane flying overhead had just stalled there and was endlessly rumbling and rolling. There were light flashes all over sky, just continuing one after the other.

Then the rain came down in strings. Well, at least that’s the literal translation of the German expression Es regnet Bindfäden. The online dictionary on use translates that into English as “It’s raining cats and dogs!”, but I think a better translation would be that the rain was coming down in sheets or buckets. Sheets, strings, cats, dogs; well, you get the idea. It was raining really hard – that part went on long into the night.

But since that storm happened overnight, we didn’t get the same phenomenon that happened a week ago, on the day we arrived back in Tübingen after our trip to the U.S. That Sunday there was another horrendous storm, but during the late afternoon. After a (literally) dark period of wind, rain, thunder, lightning, and maybe even a tiny bit of hail in the mix, the storm suddenly came to an abrupt halt. Over in the western part of the sky, we could see the sun trying to peak out … and that produced a beautiful spectacle across from our apartment.

Enjoy. 🙂

  1. What a lovely rainbow. Your storm is one I’m glad i missed. I’m not a big fan of thunder and its friend lightning.
