A Hail of a Storm

Yesterday the day started off warm, humid and sunny, just as the previous week had been.

Then, late in the afternoon, all of a sudden there was a brilliant bolt of lightning, followed by a clang of thunder that was enough to make you sit up and take notice.

Then the hail came. For about 5 minutes there followed a steady stream of what was at times marble-sized hail. Quite a bit larger than most of the hail I’ve seen before; and it was quite loud when bouncing off the roofs and street around us.

By the time I scrambled to get a camera, the worse of it was over, but the storm and the hail was still continuing.  I think you can at least get a sense of the intensity of the storm in the photos below, if you keep in mind the storm was tapering off when I took these photos.

BTW, the rain, without the hail, thunder and lightning, came and went all evening, and it’s been raining fairly steadily all day. The temperature change is pretty amazing: yesterday the temperature was in the upper 90s F (upper 30s C); today it’s plummeted to mid 60s F/upper teens C).  Of course, the prediction is that the temperatures will start rising again tomorrow. So who knows what Mother Nature will come up with next.

I’ll try to have a camera ready for some photos during the height of the storm next time. 😉

But in the meantime, enjoy this look at the end of the hail storm in Tübingen on July 28, 2013:

  1. Unglaublich was ist passiert. Ich habe richtig angst gehabt als ich diese riesige Bälle gesehen habe. Leider war ich so schokiert, dass ich keine Fotos gemacht habe. Aber deine sind super, wie immer!! 🙂 Lg Luisa

  2. Vielen Dank, Luisa! I just saw photos in the paper today that showed the *tennis ball-sized* hail you had in Reutlingen. Yikes! No wonder you were a bit to unnerved to get out your camera. The marble-sized hail we had here was so loud – and lasted so long – that I can’t imagine what it must have been like there!

  3. I liked the River of Rain picture done in Black and white because the hail was much more clear in the B and W picture. I would have liked to have been there!

  4. Thanks, Stan. It was something unusual to see in Tübingen, but I’m not sure I would have wanted to be in Reutlingen – those tennis ball sized hall stones destroyed cars, windows, roofs, and shutters. Incredible.
