On Monday the photo experiments were all about that swan. Today’s set of photo variations is all about a tree.
While I waited around for people from a furniture store to call me back, I had a series of small chunks of time available. So, I amused myself by fiddling with a photo I took the other day near the spot where I take all those postcard shots. Here are some variations of the same photo:
What intrigues me about this photo is that it’s another one where I think at first you don’t necessary understand that it’s not a real tree you’re looking at. Rather, it’s a reflection of a tree in the Neckar River. But, when you start to realize that the yellow leaves are seemingly floating in space in front of the tree, then you have to adjust your thinking about the reality of the tree itself. I.e., the leaves are floating on the water above the reflection of the tree.
Also, the railing in the photo looks curvy, but it’s not curvy like that in real life. That’s an illusion created by the reflection of the railing in the water.
Of course, my very first adjustment wasn’t the light or contrast, though. It was rotating the photo by 180°. Here’s what the photo that came out of my camera looked like:
The furniture store phone calls were less than satisfying in the afternoon, as it turned out. But, at least I had fun exploring some reflective illusions on the Neckar River.
interesting!
In other words, pictures can lie. But they can be revealing. So many detective shows I’ve watched have the moment when all seems to fail and then someone says, run those pics again saying, “we’re missing something” and then suddenly someone says, “that’s it” and the mystery is resolved.
linda they are beautiful. Call me skitzo, but there are also people in the branches of the first bunch you can really see them on the 4th one. In the upper right is steve jobs folding his hands along with other interesting things and on the left there are many people see the lady carrying her infant in the blanket and Mary to the far upper left with her mouth open. They are like little line drawings or sketches. Amazing pictures and I think it is fantastic. Remember Chris’ picture of a puddle on the side walk with the reflection of the trees. I love the idea. Shadows, reflections and arbitrary designs. Yes!!!
Thanks, everybody!
Kathy, for all that I see faces in shapes all over the place, I didn’t notice them in this photo until you mentioned it. There are all kinds of interesting shapes in those branches, aren’t there. I did take this photo on October 31, Halloween, so maybe the spirits were out and about. 😉 And you’re right, this is remininscent of Chris puddle photo on the sidewalk in Vancouver – you’ve got a good memory! For everyone else, here’s a link to the photo she’s talking about: http://www.redbubble.com/people/chrisculy/art/5414062-after-vancouver-canada-2007
Nice exploration. Did you try black and white? It seems like the photograph is more about form than colour, so B/W might be an option.
