The church that isn’t

More specifically,  the church that isn’t a church.

We can see the steeple of what we thought was a church from most of the windows in our apartment. We did wonder, of course, how loud the bells would be from the church, since it truly is right by our building, although on another street.

However, when Chris wandered by one day, he realized that it really isn’t a church, it’s now an apartment building:

A church that's not a church, Tübingen

A church that's not a church, Tübingen

There’s not plaque on the side of the building to indicate anything about it. Chris has asked around at work to see if anyone knows the story of this building The information we have so far is that it was a church at least as late as the 1990s. One person was even surprised to hear that it wasn’t currently a church, since it always had been.

But at least as far as we can tell, it’s not today.

At the moment it serves as a very accurate weather forecast system. If the steeple is hidden in the fog when I glance out of the window when I get up in the morning, then I know it’s foggy out, which means the afternoon is lightly to be clear and sunny. If the sky is clear behind the steeple in the morning, I know the weather is currently clear and may or may not stay that way. If the sky is grey behind the steeple, but the steeple itself is visible, then I know it’s not foggy and so maybe its going to rain. Simple, but so far 100 percent accurate as a way to judge the weather. 😉

BTW, crucially, from the perspective of the fact we are living in extremely close proximity to that building, there’s no bell in that tower. 😉

  1. Nice apartment building. I wonder what is up in that steeple? Maybe a little observatory?

  2. The steeple is being rented to an artist. Lofts are all the rage these days…
