Supply lines are getting longer
That’s all you need in life, a little place for your stuff. George Carlin
The comedian George Carlin had it right: life is just a series of episodes where you’re accumulating and dealing with your stuff. Continue reading
Sleeping on Roasted Coffee and Noodles
So we quickly realized the key piece of furniture we needed to buy before we can move into the new apartment is a bed. There are a couple of big furniture stores in a neighboring town, and last Saturday, one of Chris’ new colleagues kindly gave us a ride out there. After spending a whole lot of time figuring out how to buy a bed, we did successfully purchase one — it was delivered yesterday.
Ready for that personal touch
As I mentioned last week, our new apartment came unfurnished, down to the light fixtures. Continue reading
Willkommen, Meine Damen und Herren
My language class started yesterday, and it’s off to a good start. It’s an interesting mix of nationalities in the class: 3 Americans (including me), 2 Italians, and 1 person each from Cuba, Greece, Kosovo, Korea, Australia, and it’s fun practicing all our begining little dialogs with a bunch of people who are equally motivated to learn how to speak some German. Everybody in Germany speaks German
If I had a euro for everytime someone has said to me “Everone in Germany speaks English,” I could probably pay for several nice dinners by now. It’s a myth that has become an accepted fact, I guess, sort of like those urban legend emails that pop up in your email inbox. While you can’t check the validity of this one on Snopes.com, you can take it from me: not everyone in Germany speaks English.
After two weeks in Tübingen…
We’ve only been in Tübingen two weeks, but we’ve managed to make quite a dent in the usual startup stuff that’s required when you move to a new city and/or a new country. I think in large part we’re getting through stuff quicker because we wisely made the decision to give ourselves time to settle in before Chris’ job starts in October; we’ve never managed to schedule ourselves to get to a place ahead of time before. Feels almost like vacation to have the luxury of this much time to run around to do all the paperwork that has to be done. 😉 Continue reading
21st century medieval apartment
During our first few days in Tübingen, everybody — and I do mean everybody, said that it is very hard to find an apartment in Tübingen. This was not a reassuring thing to hear as newcomers hunting for an apartment.
Fog creeps in on little spider feet
On Saturday some fog rolled up the hill and engulfed the whole area in front of our apartment temporarily. Continue reading
Moving up
Our temporary “vacation” apartment here in Tübingen is quite nice: lots of light, modern fixtures, pretty comfortable bed. There’s even a dishwasher in the kitchen, something we didn’t have in our 3 years in Bolzano. Continue reading
