After it rains here in Tübingen — something it does here quite often — blue skies sometimes appear. Continue reading
Happy Halloween
Halloween is not a big holiday here in Germany; there are a few bat and ghosts decorations here and there, and sometimes kids will dress up, but it’s much more low key than in the U.S. I just got back from the U.S., though, where all the stores, offices (e.g. the AAA office where I rented a car), houses, etc. are resplendent in their Halloween decorations. So, more so than in other years since we’ve lived in Europe, I remembered that today was Halloween. 😉 Continue reading
A lovely Verona when caught in the rain
Late one afternoon last month, just after we set out for a walk in Verona, the rains came. Continue reading
Waiting at a Tübingen bus stop
Well, to be completely accurate, the title of this post should be Spotted while waiting at a bus stop in Tübingen. But at least the photo today shows that I don’t always see faces in inanimate things — sometimes I see whole figures in inanimate things. Continue reading
On horses and humor
Thanks to all for the emails and cards regarding my father. While it’s a sad time, it’s also a moment to remember all the great friends, interesting adventures, and curiosity about history and everyday things that my father experienced during his nearly 93 years. Continue reading
Sad news
I have a bit of sad news to share today. My father, who was 92, passed away late Tuesday night. It was a bit sudden, but not totally unexpected, since he had been in and out of the hospital and rehab the past few weeks.
Chris and I flew to the U.S. yesterday to be with my mother; my father’s funeral is tomorrow. Regular blog posts won’t resume for the next little while, but I’ll see you back here as soon as I can.
Back (briefly) in the Swabian Venice
Chris and I just got back from our two week trip in Italy. He’s back to work, and — after completing what I call the trifecta of grocery shopping, paperwork and laundry — I’m off to Berlin in the morning to see an art exhibit and visit friends who recently moved there. Continue reading
Gone fishing
The title of this post is a reference to something I remember seeing referenced in comic strips, where a shop-owner posts it on their when they want to play hookey and take a day off. I assume that the original usage was literal, i.e. people really were heading out on a sunny day to go fishing. Continue reading
Raindrops
I took a photo of some raindrops on a leaf the other day. Based on some of the other experimenting I’ve been doing in my “digital darkroom”, I was curious to see what happens if you start to change things to see what would have happened if the photo had been taken with black and white film, and/or with a filter or tone added. The challenge is to make the raindrops stand out in an interesting way, when a lot of the B&W film tends to make clear drops dark. Continue reading
A Shocking Development
Did you catch the breaking news over the weekend about the latest Eurovision scandal? No? Well, you’re in luck — I did.
