Happy Halloween

Halloween is not a big holiday here in Germany; there are a few bat and ghosts decorations here and there, and sometimes kids will dress up, but it’s much more low key than in the U.S. I just got back from the U.S., though, where all the stores, offices (e.g. the AAA office where I rented a car), houses, etc. are resplendent in their Halloween decorations. So, more so than in other years since we’ve lived in Europe, I remembered that today was Halloween. 😉 Continue reading

Sad news

I have a bit of sad news to share today.  My father, who was 92, passed away late Tuesday night. It was a bit sudden, but not totally unexpected, since he had been in and out of the hospital and rehab the past few weeks.

Chris and I flew to the U.S. yesterday to be with my mother; my father’s funeral is tomorrow. Regular blog posts won’t resume for the next little while, but I’ll see you back here as soon as I can.

Gone fishing

The title of this post is a reference to something I remember seeing referenced in comic strips, where a shop-owner posts it on their when they want to play hookey and take a day off. I assume that the original usage was literal, i.e. people really were heading out on a sunny day to go fishing. Continue reading

Raindrops

I took a photo of some raindrops on a leaf the other day. Based on some of the other experimenting I’ve been doing in my “digital darkroom”, I was curious to see what happens if you start to change things to see what would have happened if the photo had been taken with black and white film, and/or with a filter or tone added. The challenge is to make the raindrops stand out in an interesting way, when a lot of the B&W film tends to make clear drops dark. Continue reading
