On a clearly cloudy day

When I posted the photos of the views from the ruins of the Church of St. Nicholas in Hamburg a couple of weeks ago, I didn’t have a photo of the full facade of the church to show you.  However, I discovered that the day after I took those photos, I did take two more photos of the church that, when stitched together, provide a view of the bell tower, top to bottom.  I took these photos while standing in the empty plaza that’s now in front of the tower. The plaza is in the open-air now, but it’s where the interior of the church once stood. Continue reading

Slow going in Mannheim

Chris had yet another invited conference to go to this week (yay, Chris!).  This time it’s in Mannheim, a city just a couple of hours by train from Tübingen.  His conference is going well, and I’m having fun dodging the raindrops here to see a little of the city.

What’s slow here, though, is the internet connection at the hotel. So, I’m having some trouble with the connection to the blog and won’t be able to post a regular post until we’re back in Tübingen. But, we’re only here until tomorrow night; regular posts resume on Friday. See you then!

Hamburg by the light of day

Although I may have implied yesterday that those were the only photos I took of the Hamburg harbor, I did actually manage a few photos of that area before the sun came out and was so bright. Today’s photos aren’t as dramatic, but they will give you a better sense of what the harbor looks like on a partly cloudy day, before the sun comes out. Continue reading

Hamburg by the dark of day

So there I was at the Hamburg harbor on Friday. The skies in the morning were a bit cloudy, overall grayish-white, kind of flat. There were very occasional glimpses of sunlight and a tiny bit of blue sky. But mostly, it was cloudy. But then, just as I tried to capture a few artsy shots of the majestic large cranes and even larger ships, the sun came blasting out in full force — precisely opposite from where i was standing.
