Oh the weather outside…

Well, today we didn’t quite get any frozen puddles with interesting reflections that Will was wishing for in his comment on yesterday’s post. 😉 But last night we did get some interesting cold weather when we had the first snow of the season!

Note the season in question is autumn, since winter is still 4 weeks away. Which means that currently the other color of autumn is white.

Anyway, it was late in the evening last night when we noticed some snow had fallen, so it was already very dark outside. I snapped a couple of photos while standing inside our apartment looking out the window. Because it was so dark — and because I was too lazy to get out the tripod — the photos came out quite dark.

But, that just gave me an excuse to try a little digital darkroom magic on them to bring out the scene. I’ve included variations on 2 different photos in the gallery below.

By the way, the title of the post is the beginning the old pop song Let it Snow!, Let it Snow!. The rest of the lyrics of the song don’t quite describe yesterday’s snow in Tübingen, however:

Oh the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful,
And since we’ve no place to go,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

It doesn’t show signs of stopping,
And I’ve bought some corn for popping,
The lights are turned way down low,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

… excerpt from Let it Snow! Let it Snow  by Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne

I mean, the snowstorm wasn’t that big and it did stop, we have no fire, and we don’t have any corn for popping. And while the indoor lights are turned way down low in the song, they aren’t in the photos below; in fact, it’s the bright indoor light that caught my eye in the scene in the second set of photos I took.

But, Chris did start humming this song when he saw the snow last night, and it’s been in my head all day today as a result. I thought I’d share. 😉

So, have a listen to Ella singing Let it Snow! Let it Snow! and then check out my photos  to see what you think of this very small glimpse of the first snow of Autumn 2013 in Tübingen.

Popcorn is optional.

  1. Maybe it’s best if I retract my wish for ice, at least for now. Snow is arguably more interesting visually than ice, and your haunting rooftop photo strengthens that argument.
