Up on the roof

We had snow for several days in a row this week, but now the weather has turned a relatively balmy mid 40º F/6-8º C. So, the snow is all melted.

However, before the snow completely disappeared, I was intrigued by the pattern of the snow on the roof across the street:

Snow on the rooftop across the street

While I liked it as is, I couldn’t resist playing a bit with the photo, of course. Here’s another take, with slightly enhanced contrast and colors:

Now, because I was slightly tired out today from wandering around doing last-minute shopping (for food stuffs) for Christmas, I decided to see what that photo would be like turned on its side. And, what do you know – it now looks like that roof has a ladder on it to make it easier for Santa to climb up to the chimney tomorrow night:

Except, of course, that the “ladder” really goes horizontally across the roof as in the original photo above. Plus,  St. Nicholas here in Germany actually enters through the front door when he brings the gifts to children, and he visits earlier in December than December 24th. I don’t know where he lands the reindeer, BTW, but apparently not on the roof.

OK, so maybe the ladder in that photo is not for St. Nick, but still, when the photo is rotated 90º, it still reminds me of a ladder to climb up the roof to the chimney.

Anyway, what had intrigued me about the rooftop, in addition to the melting snow on it, was the shape of the ladder and the pattern of the roof tiles. Here’s a final take on that photo, which emphasises the detail of the pattern I liked:

Yes, I know, the photo is still rotated, and so not how I really originally viewed the scene. But, I really did see the shapes and lines this way in my mind when I took the photo. Go figure. 😉

Since I typically don’t post on the weekends, and since December 25th falls on Sunday this year, let me just add my best wishes for the holiday:  Frohes FestTanti Auguri, and Merry Christmas to all!

  1. It looks like an open box of special brownies with powdered sugar atop.

    Merry Xmas to all.

  2. I am liking the view of the roof. Yes there is always something more than what is there. I like it too. Very abstract image, which can be other worldly.

  3. Hey, you’ve been turning trees and buildings on their heads, why not knock a house over while you’re at it? I like the pattern, and I think you’re right that it views better with the ladder running vertically. Nice shot.
