Today on Food on Fridays we take a look at a couple of South Tyrolean desserts we sampled on our trip back to Bolzano.
Since it is Krapfen (jelly doughnut) season, I had to try one of those — for research purposes, of course:
In Tübingen, of course, they call these type of doughnuts Berliners. The primary difference I saw was that in Bolzano is that they don’t have a lot of different flavors available: there’s jelly (pictured above), custard-creme, and chocolate-creme. In Tübingen, in addition to those basic flavors, at least one of the bakeries branches out each year to offer unusual fillings and toppincs, including things like gummy bears. I’m not sure that’s an improvement on the basic jelly doughnut myself, but it is a difference between Tübingen and Bolzano. However, all the types in both places tend to disappear as soon as Lent starts.
But not to worry. The real dessert to note in Bolzano, as befitting a town that sits in the middle of the largest apple-growing valley in Europe, is apple strudel:
Luckily, a delicious slice of apple strudel is available all year round. 🙂
That looks so delicious I wondered if they would send them to America?
