Today on Food on Fridays we see the result of our recent quest for a Quarkie.
Quarkie, you might recall, are also called Quarkbällchen. They are little fried balls of dough made with Quark, a fresh cheese whose consistency is somehow between yogurt and cream cheese. The dough it slightly sweet, and so they make the perfect little doughnuts, typically big enough for 3 bites at most. The odd thing about them is that they have become increasingly scarce around here, even though when we first moved here 3 years ago they were easy to find.
I’ve been checking regularly in our favorite bakery for them, but there’s still no sign of them. However, back in October we stumbled upon not one, but two different bakeries that had them. So, of course we got one of each for comparison.
You’ll notice that they were similar sizes, and similarly covered in granulated sugar. Inside, they were also rather similar, except one was a bit dry, but possibily it wasn’t as fresh when we bought it. However, one of the bakeries, Padefke, had put in an ever-so-slight lemon flavor as well, and that was very tasty indeed.
BTW, I’d intended to blog about this when I took the photo, but other events got in the way, so I no longer remember which one of the two was which in that photo. But at least I remember which bakery the better one came from, which is the most important thing to know when you’re on a Quarkie Quest.
Since Chris’ October adventure we have adopted a healthier diet overall, so it’s probably better in general that it’s harder to find a Quarkie these days. However, after slogging all over town today for a variety of paperwork appointments, we remembered that Padefke had a tasty Quarkie, and so we headed there to treat ourselves.
As we were getting the Quarkie there, I was reminded that I’d never blogged about our October Quarkie Quest — an oversight which has now been corrected in today’s Food on Friday’s post.
