The Heron at the Steinlach

I’ve spotted herons in the past in Tübingen in a few different spots in town, as discussed previously in these posts:

A couple of weeks ago we were walking in yet a different area of Tübingen, along a path by the Steinlach stream (a good-sized stream that flows into the Neckar River). We’d been by there before, but on this particular day we saw where the heron that we used to see elsewhere has taken up residence. As we watched, the heron stood motionless in the water on the edge of the stream. Suddenly it ducked its head into the water rushing by; when it stood up, it had a little something for its Sunday brunch in its beak.

This past Sunday we went walking in the same area a little later in the morning. I guess Sunday brunch was over by then, since we saw the heron standing in the grass along the bank of the stream, contemplating what a nice meal it had already had.

Now I do realize it’s probably not been the same heron we’ve seen all these times. But hey, the romantic in me likes to think so. After all, I’m the one who wrote a fable about how a heron had a dream and moved from Bolzano to Florida, complete with photos to prove it. So the idea that the herons we see around Tübingen aren’t the same heron each time … well, that’s more realistic, but not nearly as much fun. 😉
