An impossible mirror

Just a quick postscript to yesterday’s post about the first day I took photos with the new cell phone camera.  As I mentioned, I did take photos in rooms other than the bedroom, but my favorite photo, yesterday’s LLM’s Unmade Bed Photo #3, was taken in the bedroom. Now, that photo has a mirror in it,  but there is no reflection in the mirror. Here’s another look at it:

But take a look at this photo, taken the same day, but in our living room:

Reflected Below, and Above

At first glance, it looks like I took this photo in a mirror; I mean, It looks like we’re seeing a reflection of me and the room behind me. Except, on second glance, you realize that the floor is above my head, so it doesn’t make sense if the scene is a true reflection in a mirror. I.e., it’s an impossible mirror: the floor is above my head in the “reflection”.

Well, it’s not just an impossible mirror — it isn’t a mirror at all. It’s not a double-exposure or anything tricky like that. Rather, my self-portrait at the bottom is a reflection in my laptop screen that is sitting on my lap in front of me. The top of the laptop forms the line that runs across the photo. The floor and artwork seen above the “line” are what I can see looking out over the laptop when I’m sitting on the couch in our living room. It’s just that the eye is initially fooled into thinking the whole thing is in a mirror, but the “mirror frame” is just one of those built-in effects that you can do with the phone camera app I have.

Now, I think overall this isn’t the greatest photo. But, what I like about it is that it shows a different way of thinking about interesting possibilities with reflections and illusions, which should be fun to explore.

After all, I can’t keeping turning reflections upside-down forever, now, can I? 😉

There will be a short hiatus on the blog while Chris and I head off to Great Britain. Chris is an invited speaker at workshop taking place in small town near Belfast, and then we’ll be in London for a very short vacation. Regular posts will resume next Wednesday, March 19th. Since there will be no Monday Mystery on Monday, here’s a link to that little “opening credits” movie I did for the series to tide you over. 😉

See you next week!
