The other evening Chris and I happened to catch a British T.V. show on German TV. The murderer in the episode turned out to be … the butler. Now, the detectives themselves joked mid-way through of the show that of course the culprit couldn’t be the butler, since everybody knows that it is a cliché to have the murderer be the butler. But there it was – the murderer was really the butler.
Now, that idea turns out to be a cliché also in Germany. Back in 1971 there was even a hugely popular song Germany that was a parody of that idea. The song is called: Der Mörder ist immer der Gärtner, “The Murderer is always the Gardener.” Click here to check it out on YouTube.
Spoiler alert: For those of you who don’t speak German, the song tells the story of a sinister gardener at a fancy mansion who goes around knocking off members of the family. However, the gardener winds up getting murdered himself in the final verse.
By the butler. Of course.
I guess the gardener is always the murderer … unless it happens to be the butler. 😉
