Surfing USA

We saw a lot of pelicans at the beach in Florida this time around. Flocks of them would routinely spring up out of nowhere and be flying in formation across the water.

OK, well, maybe they just seemed out of nowhere, as I was invariably looking somewhere else when they came by, and so would have to swing around quickly to try to snap a photo. I knew I’d taken a bunch of attempts at getting them on film, so to speak, and I’ve been curious if any of them turned out OK. But as I glanced through thumbnail-sized versions of some of my photos today, I assumed that the first photo below was  bunch of surfers on the waves, and so I kept right on with my scrolling through the images looking for the birds.

And then a second or two later, it dawned on me: Chris and I had commented while we were in Florida that we hadn’t seen any surfers on the water this time.

So, I went back and took a closer look at the photo, bringing up as a full-size image instead of just a thumbnail.  I then realized that the photo was actually a photo of one of those flocks of pelicans. As they flew by, they would periodically dip down next to the waves, almost as though they were surfing. At least, that’s how Chris and I described it to ourselves when we saw it that day. And that’s how I’d describe in now in these photos, at least the first one.

See what you think.

  1. In the “surfers” photo, they really look like they are surfing in formation. A neat shot.

I’ve never seen a large group only one.

The beach looks deserted, is this normal for this time of year here?

  2. Your first pelican picture is marvelous…not only to catch so many at one time skimming the water but to catch that beautiful wave at the right moment!
