I once talked on the blog about what happens when a pretzel is not a pretzel. You can read about that in my old post here. Today, though, I want to talk about when a pretzel is a pretzel.
Large soft pretzels are ubiquitous here in Germany. Every bakery in Tübingen bakes them fresh several times a day. There’s nothing better than a pretzel hot from the oven: soft and flavorful, both chewy enough to be satisfying and salty enough to be a nice alternative for a snack when you’re not in the mood for something sweet. Even when they aren’t hot, they are delicious – better than any soft pretzels I’ve ever had in any other country.
BTW, they don’t serve them with mustard here. I guess that’s an American tradition.
Anyway, the other day I finally got a picture of a pretzel that really looks like a pretzel.
I also did a variation of the photo, though, when I realized that with just a little coaxing, it would look like a part of the wooden table on which it was resting.
When you come for a visit, we’ll make sure we find you a fresh pretzel to enjoy. In the meantime, hope you enjoy a virtual pretzel:
What — without mustard?!? And I imagine Germany as having scores of mustard choices. At Penn, I loved the hot soft pretzels — WITH mustard — from street-corner vendors — though I’m not that much of a mustard fan in general.
