On Saturday I went on a field trip with my history of Baden-Württemberg class to visit the House of the History of Baden-Würrtemberg museum. There will be at least one post about that museum, but this isn’t it.
Instead, I wanted to share what we did after the museum visit. Now, I am familiar with the Stuttgart train station, to the extent that Chris and I have changed trains there. And I knew that there was a giant rotating Mercedes car company symbol on the top of the central tower at the train station. You can see that in this photo of the train station I took off the internet (the weather on Saturday wasn’t at all like what you see in this photo, or else I could have taken my own photo):
The people headed down the steps are going into an underground shopping area that leads into the train station; at right the people are riding an inclined moving walkway that takes you up (and down, which you can see a woman and child doing at right).
That train station tower is actually one of the few things I remembered seeing in Stuttgart many years ago when we were there before we ever even thought of moving to Europe. The first time we visited Stuttgart after we moved to Tübingen, I initially recognized nothing downtown, until I turned around and caught a glimpse of that revolving Mercedes sign.
What I hadn’t know until Saturday is that there’s a free viewing platform just underneath that sign. You take the elevator up (or walk up) 9 stories, and then walk up one more flight to reach the area just beneath the sign. I’m sure it provides great views of all parts of Stuttgart on a clear, sunny day.
Unfortunately, we got up there late in the day on Saturday, which was a cloudy, gloomy day weather-wise. So, I only took a couple of photos to show a sample of the possible views, both above and below the platform. Enjoy.
I like the photo that shows the view with the twinkling lights below in the blgs. I was surprised to see such a great view despite the lousy cloud cover. Maybe it was the tweaking. 🙂
