Going to the Dance

No, it’s not me going to the dance, but rather a butterfly and a couple of bees that Chris and I spotted one morning in Scarborough.

We were really struck by the intricate dance we saw performed, at first by a single bee and a butterfly as they circumnavigated the top of a dandelion looking for (presumably) a little mid-morning snack.

At one point, after the pair had completed almost a full circle around the flower, a second bee came to join in the dance. At that point, the butterfly decided not to share the spotlight, so to speak, flying over to a neighboring dandelion. That left the two bees dancing by themselves on the original stage — er, dandelion, while the butterfly did a solo turn on the other one.

The butterfly was a gracious star of the show, consenting to pose for a closeup at the end.

As I was writing this up today, I kept hearing a tune in the my head called Going to the Dance with You. Even though I’ve previously included that song in a blog post, it fits  well here. Even the choreography in this clip (performed by Kristin Chenoweth and two male dancers) sort of seems to match the butterfly and bee movements, since Kristin Chenoweth  goes off on her own at the end of the dance, leaving the two male dancers to dance by themselves.

Well, OK, the people aren’t actually dancing on a dandelion, of course … but still, you’ll get the idea. (Note that the song starts around the 1:00 mark in the clip).

Anyway, enjoy that as well as the photos below of the butterfly and the bees going to their dance together.

Back with more from England on Monday.
