So, there I was, about to head into the supermarket in Tübingen a little after noon on Saturday. It was supposed to be just a quick trip to pick up a couple of things before going home.
Suddenly someone grabbed my arm, and I heard a voice say “come with us, L–!” I looked around to find the head of the language school, AK, standing there with another teacher from the school, plus the Russian couple from my class and their son. It turned out they were all on their way to the plaza in front of the Stiftskirche (cathedral-like church) here in Tübingen, in connection with a “flashmob dance” that had been organized by an American woman, SK, who was a student in another class at the school. The group I ran into wasn’t going to dance, though. They were headed to the top of the bell tower at the church in order to film the action from above.
So, I allowed myself to be “kidnapped” away from my supermarket errand to accompany them over to the church. I only had my little compact camera in my purse, but at least I had that. Up we climbed through the bell tower, up 120 or more wooden and stone steps, past the 8 large bells —whose amazingly loud chimes were fortunately limited to only 2 peals at 12:30. Thank goodness we were literally after noon. 😉
We reached the balcony outside at the top just in time to get into place by 12:45 in order to have a bird’s eye view of the flashmob in action. You can see my stills of the dancing below.
Also, I found this video of it taken by someone’s cell phone camera here on youtube, if you want to see the dance from street level. You can hear the music in the video – and no, I don’t know what song that is.
One never knows that to expect when one heads to the supermarket, eh? 😉
Just a quick note: the organizer of the flashmob just posted the official video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLFRSa7YP0E.
The video from above what shot by the woman who is pictured with the camera in my “unfurling the banner” photo.
