Walking by the woods … and river … on a snowy morning

In today’s installment of the Neckar River under the ice and snow,  the twist was that it snowed again last night and this morning. So, there’s even more snow on top of that ice. Temps today continued to be below freezing, although not nearly the truly bone-chilling cold of Monday and Tuesday.

Things to note in the photos today:

  1. The “Postcard” shot may seem fuzzy, because it was snowing this morning when I took the photos at the usual time, on my way to class.
  2. I seemed to be drawn today to photograph that “island’ that sits in the Neckar River – in the dim light during the snow storm, the starkness of the trees and the solitary figures walking along there were striking.
  3. There is an odd pigeon “condo” (my term) structure that sits on the island, just as you descend onto it via a staircase from the Neckarbrücke. Today was the first time I’d seen as many pigeons sitting inside it as sitting in the tree next to it (normally, the pigeons are all in the tree, not the pigeon condo.) I don’t quite understand why there are pigeon condos like this in every park around here, but there are.
  4. I experimented a little with turning the photos into sepia (for one) and black and white (for another). Once you get away from those buildings, the vantage point today was all about snow and browns, with very little color.
  5. The tracks in the snow photos were taken this afternoon, after it had stopped snowing.  Clearly these were fresh tracks; there are always people who don’t pay attention to signs that forbid this kind of thing, I guess. But some of those tracks are bird tracks, I think. Which begs the question, where are all the ducks and swans now that the river is frozen over?
Anyway, hope you enjoy another look at the Neckar in Winter.

  1. very interesting shots. I love the pigeon condo. Neat idea. I think that European countries are a lot more human to pigeons. they shoot them in the states. I love these snowing pics can’t even tell it is snowing.

  2. One way to keep the pigeons from leaving their mark on statues etc.

    Boy it looks brrr.

Nice shots; I like the variety. Is the island under the care of the town or in private hands?
