Of Mustard and Condiments

At every open-air market we’ve been to, there has always been at least one stand serving Würste (that the plural of Wurst, which are hot dogs, only bigger and thicker). What do you put on your Würste? Ketchup or mustard, of course:

These were two of the biggest ketchup and mustard dispensers I think I’ve ever seen. No little packets of ketchup or mustard around here. No, people are serious when it comes to their condiments, I guess. I don’t recall ever seeing anything like that anywhere else we’ve lived.

Note:  I saw far more people using mustard than ketchup that day on their Würste sandwiches.

Note, too,  that there is no mayo dispenser here. That makes sense:  you don’t put mayo on Würste.  Of course not. Mayo goes on french fries. Everyone knows that … if you’re in Germany. 😉

  1. We always put mustard on our franks, but mayo on french fries, no way.

Ketchup on fries, but of course.:)

  2. Now THOSE are some condiment dispensers! Hope you’re having a good week traveling!

  3. I always used mustard on my hot dogs. After living in Syracuse home of the Hoffman frank, I use ketchup. I balked at the idea until I tried it. Now I always use ketchup. Mayo is never in my house. My friends make a nice party dish with onions cheese and mayo. It bakes up like a souffle and is rather good. So I do try stuff that I wouldn’t eat and am surpised. I would love to taste their big franks – can’t be any Würste for the wear. ;-).
