Thanks to our visiting friend, DM, I have a couple of food photos to show today. Thanks, DM, for letting me use them on the blog!
First up, we have a photo of a typical pork dish: pork medallions in a creamy mushroom sauce:
Note the spätzle noodles on the side – they are ubiquitous around here, served with many meat dishes.
Next, we have a photo of that “pocket omelet” dish I have previously talked about on the blog:
Can you spot the slices of the sausage-filled maultaschen that are mixed in there with the egg? The salad on the side always includes a blob of potato salad sort of underneath the lettuce.
BTW, it is indeed a German-style potato salad that’s always included with that kind of salad. 😉
Finally, we have another maultaschen dish that CC and I had not yet tried. The description on the menu described it as cheese and ham in addition to the maultaschen, which seemed odd. The other unusual thing was that there doesn’t seem to be a standard gravy-topped maultaschen served at this Schwabian restaurant in addition to all the alternate styles. I’m not complaining, as the dish with them in gravy is my least favorite way to eat maultaschen.
Anyway, when the dish arrived, it turned out to be just what the menu had said it would be: a minced-meat filled maultaschen, topped with a slice of ham and melted cheese:
The ham is hidden underneath that slab of cheese on top of the burrito-sized maultaschen.
Now, seriously, if that doesn’t conjure up thoughts of a Monte Cristo sandwich, I don’t know what would. At least thoughts of an inverted Monte Cristo sandwich, since the pasta (standing in for the bread here) is on the inside, and the ham and melted cheese are on the outside.
DM kindly let me taste it, and I must say, it gives that omelet/maultaschen dish a run for its money. I found it sehr lecker as they say here – very tasty!
Oh right, the pork medallions were also pretty good, too. But those odd maultaschen dishes are what I’ll be heading back for … very soon. 🙂
mmm Mary would love that blob of potato salad underneath the salad, hell she would love it all. I am a bit fatgued as I learned how to run a phone bank for Obama tonight. It was fun.
it makes me hungry to look at these pictures so I want to try each of these dishes next May!
